Safeway fruit and vegetables bag

Description

A small single-use polyethylene bag issued in Safeway supermarkets in the late 1980s for customers to use when buying fresh fruit or vegetables. The bag is printed with the Safeway logo and the words 'please use this bag for our fresh fruit and vegetables. Compliments of SAFEWAY'. Safeway was a British grocery brand founded in 1962 by American Safeway Inc. In 1987 they were sold to Argyll Foods and later listed on the London Stock Exchange. It was subsequently purchased by supermarket chain Morrisons in 2004. The polyethylene produce bag was made available for customers to use when buying loose produce. It has now been superseded by long lasting mesh bags, circa 2019, which customers purchase and are encourraged to reuse. This example was available between 1987 and 1990, indicated by the printed logo which was in use between these dates. There are a series of safety holes punched in a vertical row on each side of the bag.
