Red and black table ashtray

Description

A red and black coloured table ashtray, compression moulded in melamine formaldehyde (MF). Designed by Anna Castelli Ferrieri for Kartell in 1979, this ashtray was available for sale until 1996. Style 4640, the ashtray consists of eight cut-outs around the edge for holding cigarettes, a series of seven concentric grooved circles in the base for collecting ash, and a central section for stubbing out. Refered to by Kartell as an 'ecological' ashtray because the cigarette is extinguished due to a lack of oxygen, thus eliminating smells. Anna Castelli Ferrieri (b. 1918- d. 2006) was an Italian architect and industrial designer. She is renowned for working with plastics and co-founded Kartell in 1949, an Italian contemporary furniture company. For other examples of her work, see AIBDC : 006878, 009336 and 009337.
