Sample instrument box

Description

A sample instrument box made by Herbert Norman in 1941. Made from sheet Delaron, a laminated paper and plastic sheet, the box was made at the Walthamstow works of Thomas De La Rue and demonstrated how it could be fabricated, in place of shaped aluminium which, at that time was in short supply. The box shows how the material could be machined, jointed and reinforced with rivets and was submmitted to the Ministry of Munitions technicians to illustrate how the special qualities of the material could be exploited. This box is a small rectangular container with a slide on lid. It is accompanied by a handwritten explanation of the object, see AIBDC : 009016.2SA
